“Biography”
Peter Stam (1962) studied classical saxophone with Tom de Vette and Leo van Oostrom at Rotterdam Conservatoire and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Next to it he studied orchestral conducting with Lucas Vis and Ed Spanjaard (RC, The Hague). At an early age he played already with most of the Dutch Symphony Orchestras (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic etc.) and was for twelve years alto player in the Rijnmond Saxophone Quartet and made concert tours In Europe and Asia.
Nowadays Peter Stam combines his role as a performer (both conducting and saxophone) with a teacher ship at the Prins Claus Conservatoire (saxophone, conducting, arranging and chamber music). He was conducting opera productions at several conservatoires: Mahagonny Songspiel (Weill), Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein), Blue Monday (Gershwin), A Hand of bridge (Barber) and conducted a lot of chamber music ensembles. In 2001 he collaborated with Wolgang Rihm, resulting in a performance of his early works at the Prins Claus Conservatoire and was guest conductor at several Festivals (Ensemble Alternance, Paris). From 2010 till 2014 he was principal conductor of the Groningen Students Orchestra “Mira”. Every year Peter conducts a project with contemporary music at the conservatoire.
